This historic castle is nestled on top of an extinct volcano. It is one of two in this amazing city. This exact location has been occupied by humans long before the construction of the castle. Artifacts found on the grounds have determined that the location has been inhabited since approximately 200 AD. The castle housed the royal family of Scotland until 1633. At that time it was converted to a military installation. Currently the military shares the castle with of a museum and a society that is responsible for the conservation of the castle and its relics.

Contemporary Activities

If you have a taste for activities in a more contemporary setting, Edinburgh has plenty. Start out by enjoying a spot of tea at the Colonnades. The Colonnades is a posh establishment located inside of the signet Library. While you're there you can take a quick visit at the St. Giles Cathedral. Continue your day with a little shopping on Victoria Street. This street is lined with one of a kind boutiques that are sure to suit nearly every style. Wrap up this lovely day with dinner at Martin Wishart. This restaurant is a Michelin star winner. The restaurant features Scottish ingredients used in both classic and modern french cuisine.

Family Activities

Seeking fun for the entire family is as easy as a trip to Camera Obscura and the World of Illusions. Located in the heart of the city, this entertaining museum is part homage to optical illusions and historical facts. The star of the museum is the huge camera obscura that gives a rooftop view of the entire city without stepping outside and without using electricity. If the view through the camera obscura is not satisfying enough you can head to the roof and enjoy the views yourself. Do not forget to enjoy the five floors of optical illusions on your way to the roof. It is sure to be good fun for everyone in the family.
